Hello Oldies Lovers,
Both of today's singles are from 1963 and both are fantastic 2-siders!
The doowop single is by Tony Dell with backing by an unknown vocal group. I could unfortunately find no information about Tony or the group who backed him.
According to Wikipedia: King Records was an American label founded in 1943 by Syd Nathan in Cincinnati, Ohio, United States. The label owned several divisions, including Federal Records, which launched the career of James Brown. It released original material until 1975.
Considering that King Records was an Ohio label it is likely that Tony Dell and the group were from somewhere in the vicinity.
Today's doowop single: King 45-5766 Tony Dell - My Girl b/w Magic Wand (1963).
Today's teen single is from a guy who was for sure from Ohio. His name is Ray Saporita and the Buckeye Beat website provides the following bio for Ray:
Ray Saporita was a singer from Parma (Ohio). While in high school, he recorded a couple 45s, one issued locally, and the second one, a coupling of "Baby Sitter" and "Hercules" was released on the national IPG label. "Baby Sitter" got some airplay. Ray's sound was what is now known as "teener". The songs on the IPG record were credited to Donna Kohler, so he was part of the Jimmy Testa/Carl Maduri operations.
A 1967 Plain Dealer story mentions he sang on Arlene Ray Blank's KYW Show Wagon TV show. In 1967 Ray joined the U.S. Male as a trumpet player and singer. In 1968 he was in the Convention. In the mid 1970s, after attending college, he was performing in the nightclub circuit.
Ray continues to sing and has recently (2006) released a CD of standards.
