DooWopDave's Singles For Today

Hello Oldies Lovers,

Today's doowop single was recorded back in 1963 but was not released until 1977 on Ed Engel's Crystal Ball label.

Crystal Ball 45-107: The Dahills - I Who Love You b/w She's My Angel

The Dahills were a doowop vocal group from Brooklyn, New York. The group was formed by three classmates at the infamous Erasmus Hall High School and they got their name from a street in their neighborhood, Dahill Road. While singing at the beach one day they met Joe Cenamo, who was formerly with the Del-Cades. He joined the trio and the group now consisted of Dennis Lambert as lead singer, Ed Lambert, who sang baritone, Gordon Bayne, who sang second tenor and bass, and Cenamo, who sang first tenor and was the alternate lead.

The group went on to record several demos between 1962-1965, however, only one single was released in 1964 on Musicor 1041, Michelle b/w Why Do We Have To Say Goodnight.

The group was produced by the Tokens on most of their recordings.

The teen single for today is the only one released by Dicky Stop, whose real name was Frank Ganger, Jr. He recorded "Class Cutter" at the age of 14 back in 1958 and it was released in February of 1959 on the Chicago based label B.E.A.T., which was owned by his uncle Ted Argiris. Dale Hawkins's version was also released in February of 1959 on the Checker label, but Dicky's version was the original. Dicky would go on to appear on Dick Clark's American Bandstand TV show where he performed the song.

The song Class Cutter has my name written all over it! That was me! However, I bought the single for the B-side. Ruth Ann is a nice teen ballad and it is the much stronger side in my opinion.

Frank Ganger passed away on May 14, 2013 after a long illness.

That's it for today. As always, mp3 files of these and all my singles can be purchased here:

Rock On!

Dave
